Principal's Message (June 11, 2010)
Dear Wonderful Huff Families;
I wish to take this opportunity to express my personal appreciation for everything that students,
parents, and staff have done to make this an outstanding year. In addition to all of our annual
special events and variety of after school activities, Huff staff has continued to provide high quality
programming for our students. We’ve included a few new events and traditions this year such as student
conflict managers, “Caught you Being Good” tickets, 3rd grade pro-social skills lessons, Kinder Cinco de
Mayo, 4th grade play, and the end of year ‘5th grade vs. the staff kickball game’. We opened a new
computer lab and distributed the older computers among all of our classrooms for student use. Our
incredible PTA, School Site Council, and English Learners Advisory Committee have all made invaluable
contributions to the success of every child.
As we look ahead and plan for the 2010/2011 school year, our teaching staff is excited about moving
our practice forward as all teachers will participate in six days of professional development training
in Dr. Sandra Kaplan’s work on Depth and Complexity, a differentiation methodology for going deeper into
the curriculum. This wonderful opportunity comes from a very generous private donation from one of our
Huff families.
We look forward to offering an extended day Kindergarten program next year and a pull out GATE program
for students in grades 3-5. Our new common release time for 1st-5th graders next year will make for a
busy pick up time so as always we encourage families to walk or bike to school.
I’m pleased to announce that Mrs. White, one of our 1st grade teachers, will be acting principal
this fall until my return from maternity leave on December 1st. Mrs. White has been a new teacher coach,
school site council member, Language Arts goal team lead, and chief planning officer for our emergency
drill. Mrs. White and I anticipate a smooth transition for Huff school and for all students. We will
soon be interviewing for Mrs. White’s long-term substitute as she prepares to take the helm at Huff.
As I look forward to the birth of my son this summer, I am comforted by thoughts of all the wonderful
Huff parents who serve as incredible role models for me. I am in forever awe of your dedication to your
children’s education and personal development. I truly appreciate all that you do for the Huff
community. You are a great group of parents!
Wishing you all a wonderful and relaxing summer,
Ms. Burns
