Principal’s Message

I want to thank the entire Huff community for your tremendous support during my first year. These last ten months have gone by so incredibly fast! It has been my pleasure to get to know and learn from each of you. Thank you for your patience as I navigated my new role, and thank you for your feedback that helps me grow as a school leader. I am very much looking forward to working with all of you in the months and years ahead. Have a wonderful, restful summer! Be on the lookout for news about the start of a new school year in late July/early August.

Clearing campus on June 6

Due to the start of construction, campus must be cleared by 12:30 on June 6. The only exception is YMCA Kids’ Place, which will operate according to its normal hours. Thank you for your consideration.

Site Council 2017-18

Our School Site Council for next school year is now set. Thank you in advance to Naemi Stroebel, Gina Rybolt, Philip Lee, Dorothy Lin, Maria Lara, Marily Hernandez Martinez, Heather Pardini, and Shelley Hsieh for your service to Huff. Our first meeting is on September 12 at 3:00 p.m. in the Staff Lounge.

Call for committee members

Are you concerned about our constant traffic issues during drop off and pick up times? Do you love to tinker and build? Huff is calling for volunteers for the following committees in 2017-18:

  • The Traffic Committee will look at ways to improve safety and traffic flow in the front and back of school (Martens and Carol/Sleeper, respectively). The committee will engage city government, civic workers, and local advocacy non-profit organizations to bring about positive change.
  • The Makerspace Committee will discuss how to bring a makerspace to campus where students can design, build, tinker, and explore using both low- and high-tech tools. We recently received a donation of a 3D printer and are eager to find folks who want to make it and other tools work for Huff students!

Mountain View Public Library Summer Reading Program

Summer reading is critical to prevent learning loss. Fortunately, the MV Public Library is here to help! Info about the annual Summer Reading Program has been posted on the office window and in this week’s attached flyers. All Huff participants will be recognized and receive an award in August and everyone who meets their reading goal will receive an additional grab some good books to enjoy during the summer break!

Construction FAQ

Q: What is happening this summer?

A: The row of portables on the southwest part of campus will be removed to make space for the new MUR, for which construction will begin this summer. New, temporary portables will be placed on the blacktop. The bike racks currently next to room 23 will be moved to the tetherball area.

Q: When are the classroom upgrades happening?

A: Summer of 2018.

Q: How might construction affect us this summer?

A: The campus will be closed after 12:30 on Tuesday, June 6, the last day of school. The only exception is for YMCA Kids Place - they will operate according to their normal schedule. Much of the campus will be fenced off for construction purposes and access to the fields and playgrounds this summer will be limited.

Q: What about next year?

A: Fencing will remain up around the construction site as the new MUR will require at least one year to build. There will be some extra noise on campus next year, but we will work with the builders to keep distractions to a minimum. The new portables will be placed to maximize the usefulness of the remaining blacktop space. We should be able to keep one full basketball court. More details to come as things develop. These inconveniences will be worth it in the long run!

Q: Will traffic be affected next year?

A: Most likely. The side parking lot along the western border of our school will become a thoroughfare for construction vehicles, possibly requiring a closing of the lot to all other traffic. This is a developing situation and we will communicate out any changes as soon as we know about them.

Q: I heard the Carol Street entrance might be closed off. Is this true?

A: No, there is no current plan to close the back entrance. Based on the volume of students and families that enter that direction, this closure is highly unlikely and we would lobby actively against such a plan.

Lost and Found-- END OF YEAR

Please check out the lost and found, and get your lost items by May 31st! Thank you to Naemi Strobel and Amy Seto from Huff School Site Council for our end of year lost and found clean up. All unclaimed items will be donated to a local charity.

It’s back - the Summer Box Top Challenge Raffle!

Thank you, Huff Hawks, for bringing in over 7,500 Box Tops this year! Let’s keep up the great work over the summer! Look out and collect Box Tops wherever you go, especially when visiting friends or family. The last Friday folders this week should include a special Box Tops collection sheet to fill over the summer (K-4). Return the sheet (or just put them in a ziplock!) anytime during the first 2 weeks back at school to receive a ticket for our Back to School drawing!

Norovirus outbreak: Wash hands and stay healthy!

Recently there has been an increase in norovirus and other viral gastrointestinal outbreaks in the Bay Area and in San Jose. The Santa Clara County Public Health Department has received reports of GI outbreaks in over a dozen schools in our county.

This particular illness is highly contagious, and symptoms do not start until 1 to 2 days after exposure. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, poor appetite, and headache. It is spread primarily through handling items or touching surfaces contaminated with the virus, eating or drinking contaminated food or water, and by being next to a vomiting individual.

Hand washing and keeping surfaces clean is crucial to preventing infection. District Health Services staff members are stressing the importance of frequent vigorous hand washing with soap and water for 20 seconds, and especially after using the toilet. Younger students may need a lesson or demonstration. Please see the link for proper handwashing technique. Unfortunately, hand sanitizers and alcohol rubs are not effective against norovirus.

Anyone ill with GI symptoms should remain home until at least 48 hours after they are well. Staying home for 48 hours and continued handwashing beyond that period is critical to prevent further spread.
