12/2/20 Huff n Stuff

Principal’s Message:

Quote of the week

“In every day, there are 1,440 minutes. That means, we have 1,440 daily opportunities to make a positive impact.”

-Les Brown

Dear Huff Families,

I hope you were able to enjoy your Thanksgiving break and were able to spend time outside enjoying the nice weather.  As for me, I enjoyed spending time with my immediate family and the kitties.

Winter Activities (instructions are included)

Please stop by the MUR on Wednesday (12/9) from 9-2:30PM and Thursday (12/10 from 11:30-2PM to pick up your snowman kit. We are using all the pictures we receive in our Winter Fun Assembly on 12/18. We can’t wait to see your fun creation.

Online Assessments  (i-ready)

Next week we will be administering our i-ready assessments for English Language Arts in all grades. Teachers will be proctoring the assessment so please do not assist your child while they are taking the test. We want to make sure we are assessing what they know and how to tailor instruction to best meet their needs.  Please make sure your child is using the school issued chromebook when taking the assessment and feel free to email us if you have any questions.

Renaming Huff

Get ready to Share your Thoughts with Thoughtexchange to help us better understand what is important to you during the Huff Renaming process. Thoughtexchange enables stakeholders to engage in an online conversation.  This exchange of ideas enables us to hear your thoughts and learn about your priorities. You will be invited to participate in an Exchange that flows through three steps:

    1. Share – answer an open-ended question about your priorities for renaming Frank L. Huff Elementary

    2. Star – review ideas from other stakeholders and rate the ideas you like best

    3. Discover – learn what is important to the community as a whole

On Monday, December 7th you will receive an email with an invitation to participate. If you don’t receive this invitation, send an email to mhenderson@mvwsd.org to get added to the Exchange.

Thanks and we look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Sincerely,

Arline Siam

Holiday Gift Card Drive

I hope you and your families are staying healthy and adjusting to the new normal.    As you may know, there are several families in our district that need help to meet some basic needs and the holidays are a tough time.  In previous years, Huff has held a holiday gift drive for these families. This year, due to the pandemic, the logistics are making it difficult to collect gifts.  Instead, we would like to have a gift card drive so that families can choose what they need.  If you are able, please consider donating a gift card to families in our own district to help make their holidays a little brighter.  Thanks so much for your help!  Let’s show these families some Huff Love!

Things to remember:

Gift cards should be electronic and for only the following stores (links are included):

                    1.  https://www.giftcardmall.com/e-gift-cards/safeway-egift-card

                     2.  https://www.target.com/p/embroidered-snowflake-target-giftcard/-/A-80215236?preselect=80113018#lnk=sametab

                   3.  https://giftcards.walmart.com/ip/Floating-Spark-Walmart-eGift-Card/668655618

Electronic gift cards should be sent to our principal, Arline Siam at asiam@mvwsd.org

and she will send them on to the district office for distribution.

Families are welcome to donate more than 1 gift card.  Each individual gift card should be no more than $20 to make it easier to split them up among many families.

If you have any questions, please contact Aishwarya Rengan at arengan@yahoo.com.

If you haven't been able to attend one of the Parent University nights this year, you can find the recordings all online (in English and Spanish). Listen at your own convenience to these great programs that support parents in supporting their students.

LAMV PTA Council and SELPA 1 CAC present Distance Learning Toolkit: Increasing Focus Through a Sensory Lens

Thursday December 3, 7-8:30 PM. A talk with Lisa Kaplan Shanaan, MS OTR/L TMHP

How do you stay engaged? How do you calm down when excited, or pep up when you are zoned out? You may know your own body and the tricks that work for you, but children are still working this out. It is especially difficult to learn self-regulation when involved in distance learning on screens for hours a day. Come learn from Lisa Kaplan Shaanan, an occupational therapist and trainer, who has been working with children birth thru 18 years old for more than 30 years. She will recommend tools and techniques useful to help all children discover their best ways to self-regulate and really learn and stay engaged during the Zoom school day.
