Principal’s Message: Woodleaf
During drop off and pick up, do you currently park your car at the Carol/Sleeper intersection and walk in? If so, did you know that we have a second back entrance via Garden Terrace/Woodleaf Way? This entrance is much more car-friendly and you can drive right up to the entrance itself. Give it a shot - you’ll be helping yourself and our ongoing efforts to decongest the major entrances to the school.
There will be no school on Monday, September 4 in commemoration of Labor Day.

Interest Survey: Huff Musical!
We are currently exploring the idea of putting on a winter or spring musical at Huff for any Grades 3-5 students who want to participate. Rehearsals would take place approximately twice a week for twelve weeks, with a week of intensive rehearsals over several days leading up to 2-3 performances on the weekend. The cost would be approximately $300 per student, all inclusive. Scholarships would be available. The theater education company who would produce the musical requires a minimum enrollment. The District accomplished an amazing amount of construction work this summer, and construction continues through the school year at several sites, including ours. This year at Huff, there will be ongoing construction of the new MUR, adjacent to rooms 19-23 and rooms 15-18.

We have many new families at Huff this year who have recently moved here from other countries and need assistance understanding school news and routines. We plan to continue the Colorcycle Marker, Highlighter, Sharpie, and Dry Eraser Pen recycling program this coming year. Last year our community kept 3,890 items out of landfill! (That's a 16% recycling increase from the previous year's collection). Please bring your used markers, highlighters, dry erase markers, and sharpies to the office and drop them in the Colorcycle box to keep them out of landfill. MVWSD seeks parents, staff and community members for new Task Force groups
Task Force members lend perspective and expertise to important district work that benefits our students. Please consider serving on one of these groups, and let us know by Aug. 30 by completing an application here: https://www.mvwsd.org/about/committees.
Specifically, MVWSD is seeking parents from all schools, as well as MVWSD staff members. Spanish interpretation will be provided, if needed.
These committees will begin meeting in the coming weeks.

Interpreters Needed for Parent-Teacher Conferences in October
For the past few years, our district has provided interpreter services to improve communication between our teachers and our parents who are learning English. We have been able to provide interpreters for parent-teacher conferences every fall. We need the help of our parents and community members to identify interpreters in Spanish. If you are a fluent speaker of English and Spanish, please help our teachers and families by becoming an interpreter. If you know of someone who is qualified, please pass this information to him/her. The interpreters must be available most weekday afternoons from 12:30-4:00 p.m. between October 2 and 13. All interested candidates please apply through Ed-Join at www.edjoin.org. Interviews and testing to take place ASAP. Successful candidates will be processed in September and are expected to be available for work in October. Interpreters are needed year-round but specifically during conference weeks, possibly for IEP’s and on an as-needed basis. Interpreters receive $20.00 per hour for their service and $25.00 for IEPs.
Parent Workshop: Supporting the Success of Your Whole Child
Mountain View Parent University will present a free workshop, “Supporting the success of your whole child; understanding social and emotional development from K-8” on Sept. 13, 6:30-8pm Graham Middle School, MUR. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Come early to connect with resources! See flyer.

In this session you will get an overview of:
- What does social and social emotional development mean for you and your child
- What are common social and emotional concerns and what to watch for

- Interpretation (Spanish support)
- Child care
- Transportation (Bus departs from Castro Elementary and Crittenden Middle at 6 p.m. and returns at 8:30 p.m.)
Challenges of Dyslexia

Join Lindamood-Bell Center Director, Leila MacCurrach, for a conversation about how intensive instruction that builds the imagery-language foundation can enable students of all backgrounds and prior diagnoses to learn to read and comprehend to their potential. Lindamood-Bell's intensive, one-to- one, process-based instruction has been used to strengthen the sensory-cognitive functions needed for reading and comprehension. The method has been proven successful for individuals with learning challenges, including dyslexia, hyperlexia, ADHD, and ASD.

Mentor Tutor Connection Volunteer Information Open House - September 13
Thinking about how you can make a difference in the life of a student in our community?
Mentor Tutor Connection needs Mentors for High School students and Tutors for K- 8 students in Los Altos and Mountain View schools. All volunteers must be high school graduates.
There is no obligation to sign up as a volunteer. You're welcome to just come and learn more about what we do.
