Upcoming Principal’s Coffees in the MUR
April 20, 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. Focus: Project Based Learning
May 1, 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. Focus: Middle School Q&A
Join the School Site Council
Our School Site Council is a key committee responsible for approving and monitoring the School Site Plan advising the school administrator, and engaging in special projects as designated. This year, in addition to its regular duties, our SSC focused on transportation safety, bringing the Bike Safety Rodeo, Walk to School Days, the Bikemobile, and other related events to Huff. The SSC meets once a month after school. We are looking for one more parent member for the 2017-18 school year - if you would like to volunteer or nominate someone, please email the principal directly (firstname.lastname@example.org).
CAASPP Standardized Testing
Each spring, California students participate in the statewide testing program, the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Please read the letter regarding CAASPP from the school district here.
Grades 3-5 will test according to the following schedule:
- ELA: 4/25, 4/26, 4/27
- Math: 5/2, 5/3
- 5th Grade Science Pilot Test (no scores reported - essentially a practice): 5/4
All tests begin at 8:30 a.m.
Grades K-2 do not participate in testing.
Families, please avoid making out-of-town plans for those dates and avoid scheduling appointments, especially in the AM. Students who are absent or need more time will be able to do makeups, but we’d very much like to have as many kids test during the official days as possible. Thank you for your help.
Attention 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Huff Hawks:
We are going to do one final book this school year in Mrs. Kalb’s Book Club!
Here are the details:
We will read and discuss one book over 4 weeks.
We will meet once a week at lunchtime on Wednesdays in the library (bring your lunch - hot lunch is okay).
To apply to be a member:
Write a short paragraph to Mrs. Kalb stating why you like to read books. Include your name, grade and room number and deliver it to Mrs. Kalb. If you were a member before, you must submit a paragraph again to join this time.
Paragraphs must be received by the end of school this Friday, April. 21.
Members will be notified next week and informed of the schedule and the book we will be reading.
(Don’t) Take Your Kids to Work Day
The national “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” is Thursday, April 27. Many local companies plan events during school hours on this week.
In addition to missing important instructional time, please be aware that this is an unexcused absence for your child (Excused absences are determined by the state: They are illness, doctor’s appointments, bereavement, and certain religious exercises). Also, this day falls during the state testing period. Students absent during testing will be asked to make up tests upon their return to school.
We understand that is a great opportunity for your child to see the types of work you and your company do. Because of the conflict, we will be working with our corporate sponsors to explore other dates and times that are not as disruptive to the instructional day. Thank you for your understanding and support.
As you know, Huff will undergo construction in three phases over the next couple of years. Phase 1, the construction of a new MUR on the southwest portion of campus, will begin this summer. To make room for the new MUR, the programs in rooms 19-22 will be relocated to portable buildings on our blacktop. While this may be an inconvenience, it’s a relatively small price to pay for a brand new multipurpose room. Click here to see the official district maps of the three phases of construction. These are also posted on the Huff Office windows. If you have questions about construction, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
The date for Hawkfest 2017 has been set for Friday May 19, 5-8pm. Hawkfest is a PTA sponsored event designed to bring together the Huff Community for three hours of Fun, Food, Games, Activities, Entertainment and Socializing.
This year’s theme is" Huff Love". The success of this event depends largely on the Huff community and the generous effort of volunteers. If you or anyone you know would like to be a part of this event, please contact the Hawkfest chair, Hafsa Mirza at email@example.com.

Colorcycle Marker Recycling Program
Do you have any USED (any brands are accepted) at home or your work place? Instead of tossing them in the trash, let's Colorcycle them! Your child's classroom or the office will have Colorcycle boxes for dropoff. Our 4th grade Girl Scout troop 60840 will continue this recycling effort from last year by collecting and shipping used markers to a Crayola facility to convert them into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to fill vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more! Please go to http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx to learn more about Colorcycle. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Ariana Menhenett (email@example.com)
