Principal’s Message: Open House is Next Week

Families and friends, you are cordially invited to our annual Open House on Thursday, March 30 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Our evening will kick off on the blacktop with musical performances from our Band, Strings, and Honor Choir. Classroom visits and the Art Show in the MUR will take place from 6:30 to 7:30.

Besides being an important community event, Open House is a great opportunity to see artifacts from your children’s learning this school year so far and to their teacher’s talk about their progress. We are proud of all Hawks and we look forward to seeing you on March 30!

Hero's Day: Wednesday, March 29 at 12 p.m. (Grades K-2)

In honor of the theme of respecting differences and cultural awareness, the Student Bucket Club wants every Huff student to be able to invite their hero to join them for lunch. Grades 3-5 will invite their hero on March 22 and grades K-2 will invite their hero on March 29. Help your child think about who their hero might be: it could be a parent, a grandparent, a coach, a faith leader, or any trusted adult that your child admires. The hero will receive a certificate from their student, and they will get to do an activity together. If your child's hero can't attend, then they will still have the opportunity to make the certificate for their hero and give it them at a later time. It should be a fun event celebrating our different heroes!

Important Library Updates

The migration to our new library system will take place in early April. In preparation for the migration, there will be some impact to your child’s library schedule before the break. To ensure that we have as few checked-out books as possible before the migration, the last date to check out a book will be this March 24. All books must be returned to the library the week of March 27.

The school library will also close for the year on April 3. This will give our librarian time to prepare to move to a new temporary library while a new library is being built. For more information on construction phases, click here. Thank you for your support and partnership.

Second Harvest Food Drive

1 in 3 local kids are at risk. Can you help? This spring we’re joining Second Harvest Food Bank’s Stand up for Kids campaign to help ensure that every child who needs a healthy meal can get one. 1 in 3 local kids in Silicon Valley may not be getting enough to eat. With the support of the entire Huff community, we can help ensure that every child has nutritious food to thrive. Every $1 or 2.4 pounds you donate creates 2 wholesome meals for local kids.

Bring non-perishable food items to donate in the bins outside the office or donate online here. Every little bit counts as all of the food or funds collected from March 27 to April 7th will be used to purchase or source the kinds of foods that kids need to grow up healthy and strong. Here is the list of most needed foods.

Project Based Learning

This year, our amazing teachers have been exploring Project Based Learning (PBL) as an instructional approach, and we’ve been discovering how PBL is a terrific way to help our students develop important 21st Century skills and traits. Also, student engagement on projects is through the roof! We are looking to build upon early successes and incorporate PBL into more Social Studies and Science lessons next year. (Our core math and ELA instructional approach will remain the same in 2017-18.) To learn more about PBL at Huff, please come to the next Principal’s Coffee on April 20. And of course, please feel free to reach out directly. Thank you for your support of our school!

Growth Mindset Activities: March 2017

To continue building Growth Mindset attitudes of embracing failure, never giving up, and learning from mistakes, Huff students are participating in special “design challenge” activities once a week this March. Students will be given a problem to solve, prototype, build, make observations, test, re-build, and finally, reflect upon the learning process through a Growth Mindset lens.

Our partner for these activities, Camp Imagineerz, is hosting a free parent workshop on March 27 at 7pm in the MUR. Come and learn more about their approach and how you can build Growth Mindset at home.

Standardized Testing Window: April 24 - May 12

It’s almost that time of the year when our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders take their state standardized tests: the California Assessments of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Specific testing dates and details will be shared as soon as they are finalized. Please avoid scheduling out-of-town trips during this window. Medical or other appointments should be scheduled in the afternoons if at all possible. More details to come closer to the dates.

Construction Update

As you know, Huff will undergo construction in three phases over the next couple of years. Phase 1, the construction of a new MUR on the southwest portion of campus, will begin this summer. To make room for the new MUR, the programs in rooms 19-22 will be relocated to portable buildings on our blacktop. While this may be an inconvenience, it’s a relatively small price to pay for a brand new multipurpose room. Click here to see the official district maps of the three phases of construction. These are also posted on the Huff Office windows. If you have questions about construction, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Wizbots

Wizbots Robotics & Coding After School Labs are beginning at Huff Elementary on Monday, March 27 and Wednesday, March 29, and it's not too late to sign up! Wizbots is THE best place for kids to learn the art and science of building robots. Perfect for novices and advanced students alike, your child will learn engineering, Java programming, math, and physics in a completely hands-on way. Open to students in grades 3-5. Learn more and enroll at www.wizbots.com/afterschool.

Honorary Service Award

Each year, the Los Altos Mountain View PTA Council honors individuals or organizations that have gone above and beyond in our communities to serve children and youth.

Honorary Service Awards are designed as a unique way for the PTA's (Unit, Council & District) to publicly thank and recognize extraordinary individuals for outstanding service to the PTA and the greater community. We are seeking nominations of volunteers, teachers and community partners who have a long standing history of serving children and youth, and make a substantial positive impact on our community.

To nominate an individual:

  • Send the nominated person's name along with a brief note (one paragraph is fine!) to one of the three individuals below
  • Tell us why they are deserving of this award.
  • Send your info if you are the best contact or someone else who the committee may contact to confidentially follow up on the nominee's accomplishment

You may email any of the committee members with your nomination(s) or questions. Feel free to nominate as many people as you think qualify. Deadline for nominations is Wednesday, April 5. The Honorary Service Awards are announced at the annual LAMV PTA Council Luncheon in May at Michaels restaurant at Shoreline. Thank you! - LAMV PTA Council

Colorcycle Marker Recycling Program

Do you have any USED (any brands are accepted) at home or your work place? Instead of tossing them in the trash, let's Colorcycle them! Your child's classroom or the office will have Colorcycle boxes for dropoff. Our 4th grade Girl Scout troop 60840 will continue this recycling effort from last year by collecting and shipping used markers to a Crayola facility to convert them into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to fill vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more! Please go to http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx to learn more about Colorcycle. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Ariana Menhenett (arianame@yahoo.com)
