Principal’s Messages

  • Families and friends, please join us at Open House on Thursday, March 30 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Our evening will kick off on the blacktop with musical performances from our Band, Strings, and Honor Choir. Classroom visits will take place from 6:30 to 7:30. There will also be the amazing Art Show in the MUR.
  • Congratulations to all Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third Grade performers at the music concerts last week. I am sorry that I was unable to attend, but I know you sounded great! Thank you so much to our terrific music teacher, Ms. Christiansen and to all parents for your support. All other groups, I am looking forward to hearing you soon!
  • The exact dates for standardized testing this spring are as follows:
    • ELA: 4/25, 4/26, 4/27
    • Math: 5/2, 5/3
    • 5th Grade Science Pilot Test (no scores reported - essentially a practice): 5/4

Families, please avoid making out-of-town plans for those dates and avoid scheduling appointments, especially in the AM. Students who are absent or need more time will be able to do makeups, but we’d very much like to have as many kids test during the official days as possible. Thank you for your help.

Huff School Site Council (SSC) Meeting - Monday, April 3, 2017 at 3pm

Join us for the next Huff School Site Council Meeting on Monday, April 3, 2017. Note that the April meeting is on a Monday. It will be held from 3:00-4:00pm in the Staff Lounge. This would be a great opportunity to see what the SSC is about in case you are interested in joining next year. All are welcome. Click here for the agenda or look for it on the bulletin board in front of the office.

Project Based Learning

This year, our amazing teachers have been exploring Project Based Learning (PBL) as an instructional approach, and we are looking to build upon our successes and learnings to incorporate PBL into more Social Studies and Science lessons next year. (Our core math and ELA instructional approach will remain the same). To learn more about PBL at Huff, please come to the next Principal’s Coffee on April 20. And of course, please feel free to reach out directly. Thank you for your support of our school!

*Update/Reminder* Stevenson Elementary School’s PBL Exhibition Night is on April 6 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Mr. Chang and several of our teachers will be attending. Join us! Please RSVP to the principal and we will can take the tour together.

Lost and Found

Please check out the lost and found, and get your lost items by April 6. Girl Scout Troop 60840 will be cleaning up the lost and found after school on Thurs., April 6. All unclaimed items will be donated to a local charity.

Important Library Updates

The migration to our new library system will take place in early April. In preparation for the migration, there will be some impact to your child’s library schedule before the break. To ensure that we have as few checked-out books as possible before the migration, the last date to check out a book will be this March 24. All books must be returned to the library the week of March 27.

The school library will also close for the year on April 3. This will give our librarian time to prepare to move to a new temporary library while a new library is being built. For more information on construction phases, click here. Thank you for your support and partnership.

CSMA’s Music in Action Program

CSMA's Music in Action Program, for students in Grades 3-5, brings educational and engaging concerts to schools during the school year to promote tolerance & respect for other cultures from the past and from other geographical locations. Three local, professional performing artists come to the schools for an hour-long, 'real concert' experience.

The Music in Action performance series complements the students’ study of diverse cultures. Music teachers prepare students by introducing them to music and culture through active listening, imagery, songs, games and worksheets. Students learn to appreciate diversity as well embrace their own cultural heritage.

This third MIA segment covers African American Music - Concert on April 17, 12:50 - 1:400 and 1:45 - 2:35: The Marcus Shelby Trio presents “Blues and the Pursuit of Freedom”, a history of African American music told through blues, spirituals, field hollers, work songs, swing, and popular music. Live performance, history, poetry and field recordings combine to inspire students while they learn the importance of African American music as a tool for various freedom movements in the United States. See flyer for additional information.

Second Harvest Food Drive

On Monday, Huff Elementary kicked off our food drive partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank to ensure that every child who needs a nutritious meal can get one. Nearly 1 in 3 households in Silicon Valley doesn’t earn enough to pay rent and put food on the table. With the support of the entire Huff community, we can help ensure that every child has nutritious food to thrive. Every $1 or 2.4 pounds you donate creates 2 wholesome meals for local kids.

Bring non-perishable food items to donate in the bins outside the office or donate online here. Show your Huff Love and bring an item to donate to Open House, March 30! Every little bit counts as all of the food or funds collected until April 7 will be used to purchase or source the kinds of foods that kids need to grow up healthy and strong. Here is the list of most needed foods.

Standardized Testing Window: April 24 - May 12

It’s almost that time of the year when our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders take their state standardized tests: the California Assessments of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Specific testing dates and details will be shared as soon as they are finalized. Please avoid scheduling out-of-town trips during this window. Medical or other appointments should be scheduled in the afternoons if at all possible. More details to come closer to the dates.

Construction Update

As you know, Huff will undergo construction in three phases over the next couple of years. Phase 1, the construction of a new MUR on the southwest portion of campus, will begin this summer. To make room for the new MUR, the programs in rooms 19-22 will be relocated to portable buildings on our blacktop. While this may be an inconvenience, it’s a relatively small price to pay for a brand new multipurpose room. Click here to see the official district maps of the three phases of construction. These are also posted on the Huff Office windows. If you have questions about construction, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Honorary Service Award

Each year, the Los Altos Mountain View PTA Council honors individuals or organizations that have gone above and beyond in our communities to serve children and youth.

Honorary Service Awards are designed as a unique way for the PTA's (Unit, Council & District) to publicly thank and recognize extraordinary individuals for outstanding service to the PTA and the greater community. We are seeking nominations of volunteers, teachers and community partners who have a long standing history of serving children and youth, and make a substantial positive impact on our community.

To nominate an individual:

  • Send the nominated person's name along with a brief note (one paragraph is fine!) to one of the three individuals below
  • Tell us why they are deserving of this award.
  • Send your info if you are the best contact or someone else who the committee may contact to confidentially follow up on the nominee's accomplishment

You may email any of the committee members with your nomination(s) or questions. Feel free to nominate as many people as you think qualify. Deadline for nominations is Wednesday, April 5. The Honorary Service Awards are announced at the annual LAMV PTA Council Luncheon in May at Michaels restaurant at Shoreline. Thank you! - LAMV PTA Council

Our 4th grade Girl Scout troop 60840 will continue this recycling effort from last year by collecting and shipping used markers to a Crayola facility to convert them into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to fill vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more! Please go to to learn more about Colorcycle. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Ariana Menhenett (
