Principal’s Message

At Huff, we’re always looking at ways to engage students in personalized learning experiences that build the academic skills and traits found in the District Strategic Plan’s “Profile of a Graduate”:

  • Collaboration
  • Critical Thinking
  • Curiosity, Engagement
  • Creativity
  • Flexibility
  • Communication
  • Problem Solving
  • Technological Literacy
  • This year, our amazing teachers have been exploring Project Based Learning (PBL) as an instructional approach, and I have to say that it has been an inspiration to watch kids and adults engage in authentic, exciting learning experiences like Ms. Luongo’s Animal Habitats project or the 5th grade team’s Water Conservation project. As an instructional approach, PBL is a terrific way to help our students develop important skills and traits, and kids absolutely love it.

Looking ahead to 2017-18, PBL will be a key strategy to enhance our teaching of Social Studies and Science. These subjects naturally lend themselves to projects, and through projects, there will be ample opportunities to reinforce literacy skills too. We won’t be going it alone - our district will be supporting our work by providing funding for training and additional staff. With this support, PBL will provide flexibility for teachers to intervene with students who might struggle with key skills while extending learning for students who are excelling. Our core instructional approach to Mathematics and English Language Arts will remain unchanged.

To learn more about PBL at Huff, please come to the PTA General Meeting on Thursday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. I will be presenting more details in person and answering questions. A few of our teachers will be present to participate in the Q&A session as well. If you’re unable to make it, there will be another opportunity to hear the presentation at the next Principal’s Coffee on April 20. And of course, please feel free to reach out directly. Thank you for your support of our school!

    Growth Mindset Activities: March 2017

To continue building Growth Mindset attitudes of embracing failure, never giving up, and learning from mistakes, Huff students are participating in special “design challenge” activities once a week this March. Students will be given a problem to solve, prototype, build, make observations, test, re-build, and finally, reflect upon the learning process through a Growth Mindset lens.

Our partner for these activities, Camp Imagineerz, is hosting a free parent workshop on March 27 at 7pm in the MUR. Come and learn more about their approach and how you can build Growth Mindset at home.

Standardized Testing Window: April 24 - May 12

It’s almost that time of the year when our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders take their state standardized tests: the California Assessments of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Specific testing dates and details will be shared as soon as they are finalized. Please avoid scheduling out-of-town trips during this window. Medical or other appointments should be scheduled in the afternoons if at all possible. More details to come closer to the dates.

    Construction Update

As you know, Huff will undergo construction in three phases over the next couple of years. Phase 1, the construction of a new MUR on the southwest portion of campus, will begin this summer. To make room for the new MUR, the programs in rooms 19-22 will be relocated to portable buildings on our blacktop. While this may be an inconvenience, it’s a relatively small price to pay for a brand new multipurpose room. Click here to see the official district maps of the three phases of construction. These are also posted on the Huff Office windows.

If you have questions about construction, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Don't Miss Huff's Science Night on March 14

Science night will be coming to Huff on Tuesday March 14 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. All students and parents are welcome! This year’s theme is Secret Agent Science. Become a science detective who uncovers clues and follows great leads! Gather all the tools and knowledge needed to lift fingerprints, analyze handwriting, track footprints, and extract DNA. With your spy glass and cipher wheel, you can solve the world’s mysteries! This event is coordinated by the Children’s Discovery Museum and sponsored by the Huff PTA.

    Hero's Day: Wednesday, March 22 at 12 p.m. (Grades 3-5) and Wednesday, March 29 at 12 p.m. (Grades K-2)

In honor of the theme of respecting differences and cultural awareness, the Student Bucket Club wants every Huff student to be able to invite their hero to join them for lunch. Grades 3-5 will invite their hero on March 22 and grades K-2 will invite their hero on March 29. Help your child think about who their hero might be: it could be a parent, a grandparent, a coach, a faith leader, or any trusted adult that your child admires. The hero will receive a certificate from their student, and they will get to do an activity together. If your child's hero can't attend, then they will still have the opportunity to make the certificate for their hero and give it them at a later time. It should be a fun event celebrating our different heroes!
