Principal’s Message

During Spirit Week in January, we had a “Civic Appreciation Day.” On that day, every student had the chance to write thank you letters to our local librarians, firefighters, and police officers. I’m excited to announce that some of these civic workers will be on the Huff campus to receive these letters of appreciation on Wednesday, May 24 at 10:00 a.m. Police officers and firefighters will be on campus in celebration - so please don’t be alarmed. They will mingle with students and students will be treated to impromptu show-and-tell sessions and Q&As about these important jobs. We hope it will be a meaningful time for all and look forward to filling the the civic workers’ buckets!

Travel Tip of the Week

If dropping off by car, always pull up to a designated curb drop off location. We do not recommend having students exit the car at a stop sign or into the flow of parking lot traffic. These moves are unsafe and cause backups.

Share Your Thoughts on Proposed Boundaries

Our community is in the process of redrawing school attendance boundaries for the 2019-20 school year and beyond. We are nearing the end of that process and want to invite all stakeholders to share their thoughts on the final two options that will be considered by the Board of Trustees. You should have received an email from “Share Your Thoughts - Thoughtexchange.” Please do not discard this message - it contains an important feedback link. Your input will be used by the Board of Trustees as they make their final decision. Before you take the survey, take a look at the district webpage about the process. Here you will find the maps for the two final options.

Healthy Kids Survey

Please look for a letter this week asking your child to be a part of our school’s California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) sponsored by the California Department of Education sometime between May 22 through May 31. This is a very important survey that will help promote better health among our youth, improve the school learning environment and combat problems such as drug abuse and violence.

The survey is voluntary and anonymous. If you do not want your child to complete the survey, you must fill out and return the Withdrawal Form no later than May 5, 2017 to your child’s school office.

Girls on the Run Practice 5K Run

Girls on the Run is having a practice 5K on May 10 after school at 2:45pm. The girls have been training all spring for their upcoming race. Please come and show your Huff Love by cheering on the 3rd through 5th grade girls as they run 3.1 miles (15.1 laps) around the Lynne Lowe Loop!! Volunteers are needed to count laps, hand out water and help with other race activities. Please contact Caroline Jones at car.j.jones@gmail.com if you can volunteer to help. We hope to see you there cheering on the girls!

Toiletries Drive

Are you traveling soon? Consider buying a few extra travel toiletries for unhoused people in Mountain View. Girls on the Run is collecting items to support the homeless clients at Hope's Corner. Hope's Corner is a Mountain View based non-profit that provides meals and and free showers to unhoused people.

Hope's Corner has asked for:

- New Toiletries (most needed: mouthwash, deodorant, travel size hand sanitizer, toenail clippers, shaving cream and razors)

- New Combs & Brushes

- Boxes of Packs of Hot Chocolate and Oatmeal

A collection box is in front of the office. Last day to collect is May 16. Thank you for your generosity!!

Bike It! For all 5th grade students entering Crittenden and Graham

Safe Moves and School Site Council are sponsoring an event for incoming 6th graders to get to know their safe bike route to school! If your child is planning to bike to either Graham or Crittenden next year, they are invited to one of these events:

Bike It! Graham - May 20 9-11am

Starting locations: Huff, Bubb, Landels, Castro

Bike It! Crittenden - May 20 1-3pm

Starting locations: Monta Loma, Theuerkauf, TBD in the whisman area

5th Grade Gala Concerts

Please note that all Gala Concerts will be held at CSMA (click here for Band - May 23 and Strings - May 17 concert information).

5th Grade Instrument Return

Instrument return this year will be different than previous years. To improve the process of collecting instruments by end of school year, Instruments will be collected from students at Graham Middle School (1175 Castro Street) in room #52. We are hoping this process will help to receive the instruments on time and have them ready for the next school year.

  • Thu. May 18, 12:45 - 2:45 pm - String Instrument collection - see flyer for details
  • Fri. May 26, 3:00 - 5:00 pm - Band instrument collection - see flyer for details

Parent/Guardian and student should be present to check the instrument’s condition. In case you can’t make it for the dates posted, please contact Raquel Hernandez at 650-237-1234 to make appropriate arrangements. Those students participating in the summer program do not need to return their instrument. CSMA will give them instructions at the end of the summer program.

Silly Week at Huff

In the week leading up to Hawkfest we are excited to celebrate Huff SILLY WEEK by having the kids dress in a silly way each day. This will take place May 15-19. The outfits are intended to be something that can be put together from items you already have at home.

Here’s the Silly Week Schedule:

  • 5/15 Monday: Beach Day - Students can bust out those Hawaiian shirts or board shorts and dress like they're going to hang out by the waves. (Hula skirts, leis, and salt water optional.)
  • 5/16 Tuesday: Backwards/Mixed Up Day - Now when your child accidentally puts on their clothes inside out or backwards, you don't even have to correct them. This is the day for them! And if they can somehow wear pants as a shirt or vice versa, more power to them.
  • 5/17 Wednesday: Pirate Day - Arrrrren't you excited, me hearty, that today's the day to wear your best swashbuckling ensemble?
  • 5/18 Thursday: All One Color Day - Show your allegiance to your favorite color by dressing from head to toe in ONLY that color.
  • 5/19 Friday: Crazy Hair Day - Does your child's hair always look like a bird's nest? This is the day to actually make it into one OR any other crazy hairdo you can dream up.

Got Fruit? It's that time of year again.

As we fast approach summer, Ms. Deborah is gearing up to make her canned goodies, including jams and sauces. If you have an overabundance of fruit, please contact her at dedidoright@hotmail.com. Fruit can be dropped off or she can pick up at your convenience. Cannot use overly ripe fruit.

Cakewalk at Hawkfest 2017!

Please consider baking a treat for the Hawkfest Cakewalk. Please package your goodies into (generous) single servings on small paper plates, wrapped in Saran or a Ziplock bag - one piece of cake or two cookies/brownies per serving. Please provide an ingredients list for food allergy safety. Thank you.

Hawkfest 2017!!

The date for Hawkfest 2017 has been set for Friday May 19, 5-8pm. Hawkfest is a PTA sponsored event designed to bring together the Huff Community for three hours of Fun, Food, Games, Activities, Entertainment and Socializing.
This year’s theme is" Huff Love". The success of this event depends largely on the Huff community and the generous effort of volunteers. If you or anyone you know would like to be a part of this event, please contact the Hawkfest chair, Hafsa Mirza at hafsahr@hotmail.com.

Kids Place provides before and after school care for Huff Hawks. Open Enrollment for 2017-18 begins on May 15. For more information, or to pick up an application, please go to the Kids Place Room (next to room 25).

Open Auction Parties

There are still some fun auction parties with open spots. If you are interested in any of the available parties, you can still sign up for a party online at http://huffptaauction.com and bring cash or a check made payable to Huff PTA (in the memo write which party you are attending). You can drop it off in the office to the attention of Beth Davis.

Colorcycle Marker Recycling Program

Do you have any USED (any brands are accepted) at home or your work place? Instead of tossing them in the trash, let's Colorcycle them! Your child's classroom or the office will have Colorcycle boxes for dropoff. Our 4th grade Girl Scout troop 60840 will continue this recycling effort from last year by collecting and shipping used markers to a Crayola facility to convert them into clean fuel. Construction Update

As you know, Huff will undergo construction in three phases over the next couple of years. Phase 1, the construction of a new MUR on the southwest portion of campus, will begin this summer. To make room for the new MUR, the programs in rooms 19-22 will be relocated to portable buildings on our blacktop. While this may be an inconvenience, it’s a relatively small price to pay for a brand new multipurpose room. Click here to see the official district maps of the three phases of construction. These are also posted on the Huff Office windows. If you have questions about construction, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Join the conversation! Ideas exchange about elementary school boundaries

MVWSD is in the midst of a community-wide process to make adjustments to elementary school boundaries intended to relieve overcrowding at some schools and provide for the opening of Slater Elementary in 2019-20.

The Student Attendance Areas Task Force has been reviewing District demographic data and working to produce boundary scenarios. The goal is for the Board of Trustees to consider two boundary options on June 1, 2017 and approve one of them on June 15, 2017.

You should have an email from ShareYourThoughts@mvwsd.org asking you to participate in an online exchange of ideas about boundaries. The thoughts and comments you provide will be used by the task force and the Board to inform the final boundaries choice.
