May 8, 2019
A big, big thank you to the entire Huff community for the gestures of Huff Love for Staff Appreciation Week! Thank you for the flowers, treats, and taking over our yard supervision duties this week: it’s been awesome! Believe it or not, we don’t go into education for the chocolate, but it definitely doesn’t hurt! Please know that we feel the same way about your daily support across many realms at Huff, from volunteering in the classroom to chaperoning field trips, from helping out with special events to supporting our PTA with donations. It takes a village, and we’re glad we are part of this one.

State testing continues this week
Students in grades 3-5 are in the midst of taking the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). This set of standardized tests includes a English Language Arts assessment and a Mathematics assessment. Fifth graders will also take the California Science Test. Families, please check the school calendar for specific dates and avoid taking out-of-town trips or scheduling morning medical, dental, or other appointments during the testing window. More detailed information to come in the following weeks.
Electives selection for grades 5-7 opens at 4 pm on May 1
It is the time of year when our incoming middle school students (grades 5-7) choose their electives courses for next year. All 5th-7th graders should select their course electives online by May 10, 2019 through the PowerSchool portal.
Parents, please look for an email in your inbox from April 26 with links to course catalogs and directions. Please talk with your student and then log in to your PowerSchool portal account (either student’s or parent’s) to help your student select his/her electives. If you have difficulty with PowerSchool, please contact your school secretary. If you need help, please call or visit your school office or attend the registration support time on Thursday, May 2 from 3-4 pm, and 6-7:30 pm; and Coffee with the Counselor on Friday, May 3, 8-9 am. More information at www.mvwsd.org/MSelectives.
Spring Pictures from LifeTouch were distributed the week of Open House.
Please ask your child for the package if they have not already given it to you. If you want to purchase any or all of the pictures, fill out the Payment Form and enclose the money. Please return the Payment Envelope to the office along with any pictures you do NOT want, keeping the ones you are paying for. If you do not want ANY of the pictures, return the entire package to the office. Payment and/or pictures are due to the office by Friday, May 10, 2019.
Volunteer Opportunity: Field Day, May 20
Our annual PE Field Day will take place from 8:00 to 9:40 a.m. on Monday, May 20. This is an annual event and the kids absolutely love it. We will, however, need parent volunteers to help us move the kids from activity to activity. Each class will need at least two parent volunteers. Look for a Konstella or email message in your inbox to sign up soon! Thank you so much for your help.
On-campus before- and afterschool care programs registering students now
We know that finding reliable, high-quality, affordable childcare is a challenge for many of our families and staff members. Increasing these offerings at our schools to meet demand has been a priority for MVWSD. On campus, our schools host several long-standing programs -- Beyond the Bell and the YMCA Silicon Valley Before and Aftercare -- in addition to a new one planned to open this fall, Right at School.
Right at School is a fee-based, nationally-recognized before- and afterschool program held every day that school is in session, from 6:30 AM until 6 PM, plus drop-in and school break care. It is planned for all MVWSD schools, including middle schools and the new Jose Antonio Vargas Elementary. Right at School presents experiential two-week science enrichment curriculum units, such as “Icky Experiments,” “Page to Stage,” and “Young Detectives.” The program incorporates physical movement, outdoor time and homework completion. It offers 10% sibling discount, 25% discount for free and reduced lunch families and flexible 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 day pricing options.
A parent information meeting for the new Right at School program has been scheduled at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7 in the Graham Middle School multi-use room (1175 Castro St.). This meeting will help answer any questions you have about the program. The meeting is not mandatory. You may also go to www.rightatschool.com for registration and this webpage for information and fees.
HAWKFEST is Friday, May 17, but planning starts now!
Hawkfest is our year-end 'school carnival' with games, crafts, entertainment, food and fun for the whole family! We still need a few volunteers to help with things like planning food, entertainment, classroom activity planning and vendor management . Check out our sign-up sheet on Konstella to pitch in and make it another great Hawkfest.
Karaoke is coming to Hawkfest!
Huff Dad, DJ Purple, will be helping coordinate awesome karaoke fun at Hawkfest this year. We would love to have large groups of students, families, or individuals join us to sing their favorite tunes! Please sign up in the main office by Friday, May 10 with your song request. Any questions? Email email@example.com
Register Today for the Mountain View School District Chess Tournament!

MVEF, together with numerous educational foundations throughout the Bay Area, is recognizing May 9 as a day to Stand Up for Public Schools. Our public schools are integral to the development of our future leaders and citizens, and their excellence is dependent on every child, at every school, having access to a competitive, well-rounded education.
If you have not donated this school year to MVEF, please consider doing so today. Your child has access to art, music, science, field trips, athletics and more thanks to parents like you who generously donate. CodeRev has committed to matching $1000 for first-time donations this May. Help us reach our annual goal to raise $750,0000 to get this matching donation, and support your child and every child. mvef.org/donate.
