Nov. 28, 2018
With more winter rainy days ahead, here are some reminders about car etiquette when using the front driveway:
- We will assign additional staff to direct traffic whenever needed. Please follow all staff instructions.
- Pull all the way down to the end of the driveway. This makes space for people behind you.
- Do not cut in the car line. Here’s why:
- It usually results in a worse backup because the “open” spots are not always as far down the driveway. When you stop there, you shorten the length of curb available for people behind you.
- It’s quite unsafe for pedestrians.
- If you are running late, you may be tempted not to pull down all the way. This makes more people late. Please always pull down as far as you can.
As the father of two young children, I completely understand it’s not always easy to get out the door. Remember that we have supervision available at 7:30, when traffic is minimal. Thank you for your attention and care.
Library to close next week in preparation for move
The new library building is nearing completion! Movers will be moving the books and furniture from the temporary library into the new library over the December Break, which means our librarian, Mrs. Kalb, needs to start packing. Therefore, all school library books are due back by Friday, November 30. All of the students should already know this, as teachers have been telling them, but please double check with your child. Thank you.
The new library will open sometime in January, TBA.
Noon Duty Assistant position
We are looking for one more individual to help with supervision at lunch time. More coverage is always better! If you are available between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and are interested in the position, please contact Mr. Chang (email@example.com).
New visitor/volunteer sign-in system
After the Thanksgiving Break, we'll be rolling out new electronic visitor/volunteer sign-in systems at our schools. The new system will increase security by alerting staff to any potential concerns, as well as improve the accuracy and efficiency of the sign-in process. Instead of signing in on the book on the counter, you will be able to show your ID at the kiosk and have a visitor badge printed for you. There will be an extra step the first time you sign in yourself or your child (e.g. after a doctor’s appointment) because the system will require a form of ID, such as a driver’s license; however, it will remember your information for the next time you sign in. Thank you for your patience as we learn to use the new system that will upgrade security at our schools.

Let Me Run
Let Me Run is looking for at least two parent volunteers to coach the spring Let Me Run season at Huff. Let Me Run is a 7-week wellness program that inspires boys to be themselves, be active, and belong. With a comprehensive curriculum that applies the power of running, we encourage boys to develop their psychological, emotional, and social health, in addition to their physical health. (think Healthy Masculinity). This program is for 4th-5th grade boys. Your boy can participate in 3rd grade if you are a coach. The program prepares all boys to run a 5K in mid-May (May 11, 2019)
Practice times and days are TBD based on the coaches. They can be any time after school and/or on weekends. Coaches do not need to be runners. Head coach needs to attend a training led by fellow Huff parent, Sheetal Shah, on Jan 12 or Feb. 9 at the El Camino YMCA. Training is 3.5 hours long. Assistant coaches will be trained by the head coach before the season begins.
Please help us continue this program at the school where it all started on the west coast! If you are interested in being a coach, please contact Sheetal at email@example.com

Be in School; Be on Time
Why is it important that students are in school regularly? Research shows that school attendance is a strong indicator of success. It's about students learning what they need to know, belonging to the school community, and being part of the team that is preparing them with good habits for high school. Colorcycle (Marker/Dry Erase recycling)
ColorCycle is a wonderful program devised to turn used markers into energy!
Since the pilot of the program in the spring of 2016, Huff families have collected almost 12,000 used markers/sharpies/highlighters/dry erase markers and kept them out of landfill. The markers are sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!
Please continue to help support our efforts by having your kids drop off throughout the year, any used markers, sharpies, highlighters or dry erase markers you may have around the house – even non-Crayola brands. Drop-off boxes will be located in classrooms for your child to deposit the markers. This is being organized through the 3rd/4th grade girl scout troop #60070.
Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year. To learn more about the Colorcycle program, check out www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx or email Huff parent Ann Walsh (email@example.com).
