Huff will celebrate the 8th Annual College Day on October 19, 2018

Our goal is to create a college-going culture among students, and to inspire them in their pursuit of a college education. Even though your student is in elementary school, there are a lot of things you can be doing right now that will help your student be ready for college. Doing your homework every night, learning about what jobs you are interested in, studying for tests, and talking to your student about college are all ways to get prepared.

Unity Day - Oct. 24

Wednesday, Oct. 24, Huff will celebrate Unity Day to affirm our stance against Bullying and be United for Kindness and Inclusion. We encourage students, staff, and parents to WEAR ORANGE in support of Unity Day.The kids will write positive messages on the blacktop with chalk and have a dance party at recess.

Annual Halloween Parade: New AM time

New time: 8:15-9:00 a.m. on October 31. Please mark your calendars! If driving, have a plan for where you will park and come early that day. Remember, the front parking lot is for staff only. Other details:

  • We are working on a revised, larger route for the parade - we’ve grown too big to have everyone on the blacktop. Please follow signs and directions when you arrive.
  • Students may wear costumes during the day as long as it is safe and not distracting to do so.
  • Masks, excessive gore, and sharp/dangerous props are not allowed.
  • Each teacher will have discretion about whether and when related celebrations can take place that day. Please do not send students to school with candy.

Operation Gratitude, Part 1: Letters to our troops

Huff is supporting a project by two MVHS students called Operation Gratitude: this week there is a box in the office for students to drop off letters of support to our men and women in the armed forces. We’d love to have as many people contribute letters as possible. Letters/postcards/artwork are all accepted and should not be sealed before being dropped in the box.

Enchanted Forest Book Fair – THANK YOU!

Thanks to all the amazing Huff families for a very successful Book Fair! And, special thanks to all the parents who came out and volunteered! We greatly appreciate everyone’s contributions and support for the school Library and classroom libraries. We have a great Huff community. It was a magical and enchanting week!

Dropping off items for your child during the school day?

Please leave all items at the office and we will either have your child come to pick it up or we will bring it to the classroom for you. Let the office know if for some reason you need to bring it personally.

Noon Duty Assistant position

We are looking for one more individual to help with supervision at lunch time. More coverage is always better! If you are available between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and are interested in the position, please contact Mr. Chang (gchang@mvwsd.org).

The 21st Annual Huff PTA Party & Auction is on Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 6:30 - 11:00 p.m.. It is time to register for a Wonderfully Wicked Evening and check out the amazing catalog of items that will be available at the auction. Go to the Huff PTA website to register and view catalog. If you have questions about the Huff Party and Auction, check out the FAQ for more details. This annual event is the Huff community’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and we need your support to make the event a success! The Auction is FREE to attend, but we strongly encourage you to register in advance so you can avoid the long registration line on the evening of the event.

Volunteer to Help

Please consider volunteering an hour or two of your time to help with auction preparations, day of event setup, checkout, and more. Check out the signup sheet for jobs and items you could loan for the evening (water dispensers, folding tables and more).

Purchase Raffle Tickets

One of the fun ways the PTA raises money for our Huff students and staff is a raffle. This year we have three raffles: Four Disneyland Park Hopper Tickets, Premier Huff Parking, and Staff Prizes. Also, every auction attendee will receive ONE FREE raffle ticket on the evening of the event to enter the raffle of their choice. Winners for the three raffles will be selected at the auction. You do not need to be present to win, but we hope everyone will be there!. Raffle tickets were sent home in your child’s Friday folder. Each ticket is $5 or 5 tickets for $20. Please return the attached form with cash or check (made out to Huff PTA) at the Huff office. We will also be selling tickets at school, outside of the office, the week of October 22-26.

Reserve Childcare for Auction Night

YMCA Kids Place at Huff will provide child care on Auction night, October 27. Kids will enjoy an evening of fun, food (dinner & dessert), plus games. Reservations are required in advance. Sign-up sheets are available at the office and at the Kids Place. Space is limited so reserve today. The PTA Membership team is continuing to process/distribute tax receipts for all donations received. If you need your receipt right away for any reason, please let us know.

Negative Lunch Balances

We strongly encourage you to keep your student’s lunch account balance current. Overdrawn student meal accounts have a negative impact on the District’s budget, which in turn, reduces the educational resources available to all of our students.

We have several simple payment options for you to choose from. No matter which payment option you choose, please know that negative balances must be paid as soon as possible.

  1. Pay online at EZSCHOOLPAY.COM: Add money to your student's account.
  2. Drop off a check at the school office: Checks should be made payable to MVWSD Food and Nutrition. Please include your child’s name and student ID number.

After paying your outstanding balance, we encourage you to create a “safety net” for your child. Pre-paying for your child’s meals is a simpler way of managing their account, and prevents unpaid meal charges. Paying for meals before the meal service also helps lunch lines move more quickly, giving children more time to enjoy their meal.

If your family is experiencing a financial setback, please contact us so we can help. We can assist you in applying for free or reduced price meal benefits. You may do this at any time during the school year, and must apply each year. Applications are available at your child’s school office or online at EZSCHOOLPAY.COM.

ELS Parent Classes

We are happy to announce that FREE English classes for parents are once again being offered at Mariano Castro. Come to Castro’s Teachers’ Lounge (by the front office) on Saturdays between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. to register. Classes will run from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. All levels and all home languages are welcome. Classes are for adults in the family who would like to develop their skills in English. Snacks and childcare will be provided. Check the flyer for class schedule.

MVWSD Hearing and Vision Screenings

"Each fall, MVWSD conducts hearing and vision screenings of all students in kindergarten, second-, fifth- and eighth-grade, as California State Law mandates. These screenings will take place at your child's school site, Huff Elementary on October 22, 2018.

Parents will be notified in writing if children fail a screening. Parents who do not want their child screened for either vision and/or hearing should send a letter to their child's school each school year indicating that their child is to be excluded, and vision and/or hearing results will need to be provided from their physician.

If you have any concerns about your child’s vision or hearing please contact your school nurse. Questions about the screenings should be directed to the Health Services office at 650-526-3570 ext. 1050.

STEMtastic Saturday

An event for parents, students & teachers with digital learning, hands-on activities and prizes. Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. at the Crittenden Middle School Innovation Center, 1701 Rock St.

MVWSD is partnering with Discovery Education on a fun-filled afternoon of exploring real world problems through hands-on and digital activities. Experience first-hand how students today use Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) to tackle issues that impact their future and prepare them to be successful in college or the careers of their choosing.

Let's Talk: Curriculum Adoptions

MVWSD has a new video series called "Let's Talk" that addresses topics that are important to parents and the community. "Let's Talk: Curriculum Adoptions" explains how we choose the materials our student use to learn and how often and why we make changes.

Project Cornerstone – for parents and caregivers!

The Mountain View-Whisman School District is offering a free series of parent meetings open to all parents and caregivers. Join Project Cornerstone’s engaging workshop - Take It Personally, starting on Tuesday, October 16 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Monta Loma Elementary School. You do not need to be a parent from Monta Loma, just an adult who cares about all kids.

We know that your strong family is the best predictor of your children's success. Parents and caregivers need fresh ideas that work to keep families close, as children grow. Come learn new tools for strengthening your relationships with children and youth in this 6-week workshop facilitated by Project Cornerstone. Each week we will share, discuss, and practice ways to show caring, give support, set boundaries, and build strong relationships that help youth succeed in school, friendships, and life!

Mentor Tutor Connection Volunteer Information Session - October 23

You can change the life of a student! Come learn about volunteer opportunities to Mentor high school students and Tutor students in grades K-8 in our Mountain View and Los Altos schools.

There is no obligation to sign up as a volunteer. You're welcome to just come and learn more about what we do.

All volunteers must be high school graduates.

Family Talk: Puberty program

Health Connected, in partnership with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, is holding "Family Talk: Puberty program designed to promote healthy communication within families that lasts a lifetime!" Through drawings, multimedia, and activities, Health Connected's parent-child communication expert, Vanessa Kellam, will guide families as they explore the physical changes that many youth experience during puberty. In a relaxed setting, families will learn, laugh and share, making a potentially sensitive subject more comfortable.

Colorcycle (Marker/Dry Erase recycling)

ColorCycle is a wonderful program devised to turn used markers into energy!
Since the pilot of the program in the spring of 2016, Huff families have collected almost 12,000 used markers/sharpies/highlighters/dry erase markers and kept them out of landfill. The markers are sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!

Please continue to help support our efforts by having your kids drop off throughout the year, any used markers, sharpies, highlighters or dry erase markers you may have around the house – even non-Crayola brands. Drop-off boxes will be located in classrooms for your child to deposit the markers. This is being organized through the 3rd/4th grade girl scout troop #60070.

Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year.
