Principal’s Message

On behalf of the staff, I want to thank everyone who was involved in the planning and execution of last weekend’s Wonderfully Wicked Evening! It was such a fun party and it was so great to see everyone come out in support of our school. Special appreciations go to our Auction Committee and committee chair, Lavanya Ramakrishnan, and everyone who volunteered their time and sweat to this wonderful event. And thank you to all attendees - your donations make it possible for us to prepare every child with a well-rounded education, preparing them for success in their futures. We are truly blessed to have such a caring, supportive community. The party and auction was Huff Love, embodied!

Operation Gratitude - Part 2 is back!

Too much candy in your house after Halloween? Why not donate your extra candy to Operation Gratitude? Huff is teaming up with Grant Road Dental to collect and donate extra candy to our men and women in the Armed Services. There will be collection bins outside of the office for a week after Halloween (until Friday, Nov. 9). Special thanks to 4th grader Lara P for spearheading this 4 years in a row!

Trimester 1 Ends Friday: MINIMUM DAY

Can you believe we’re a third of the way through the school year? Trimester 1 ends on Friday, November 2. It is a minimum day: students will be dismissed at 11:55 a.m. Trimester 1 report cards will be sent home on Friday, November 16.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Huff PTA's 21st Annual Party & Auction!

It took a school-wide effort to put together a Wonderfully Wicked Evening that was both fun and successful in its fundraising goal! Special thanks to everyone who helped plan this event from those of you who donated items, organized classroom & teacher donations, solicited donations from businesses, prepared auction catalog descriptions, reviewed item descriptions/bid sheets, planned decorations and food and finally to all of the volunteers who helped transform the Senior Center on auction day and then cleanup when the party was over. Without so many amazing volunteers this event would not have been possible!

If you still need to pick-up your purchases or have any questions, please contact fundraising@huffpta.org with any questions. Thank you for supporting Huff Elementary School PTA!

Don’t forget to log your volunteer hours!

If you didn’t do it when you signed in and out at the office, or if you did work at home for Huff, log your hours at tinyurl.com/huffvolunteers. Help us get to our goal of 11,500 hours by the end of the year (that’s approximately 1,200 hours per month). Thank you for your help.

Dropping off items for your child during the school day?

Please leave all items at the office and we will either have your child come to pick it up or we will bring it to the classroom for you. Let the office know if for some reason you need to bring it personally.

Noon Duty Assistant position

We are looking for one more individual to help with supervision at lunch time. More coverage is always better! If you are available between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and are interested in the position, please contact Mr. Chang (gchang@mvwsd.org).

Box Tops Update!

Hi Huff Hawks!! I just sent in the Box Tops for this fall and it was the most we’ve sent in 2 years!! Over 3000 box tops were submitted since the spring. So those little pieces of cardboard have been magically transformed into over $350 for us to use to support our school! Keep clipping and turning them in, I’ll be sending another submission in the spring and I hope it’s even more than 3000! Thanks for all you do to support Huff :) If you have any questions please contact the Box Tops Coordinator Gina Rybolt at geeners@gmail.com. KEEP CLIPPING!

Girls on the Run

We are looking for one more parent volunteer to coach the spring Girls on the Run program at Huff. GOTR is a 10-12 week program geared to 3rd to 5th grade girls to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, and physical development through healthy choices and physical activity. At each practice session, coaches lead individual and group activities using the GOTR curriculum. In the second half of the session, coaches provide encouragement to girls as they run laps around the Huff field to reach their running goal for the day. The program prepares all girls to run the regional GOTR 5K in mid-May.

We have four coaches signed up and we need one more to round out the group. Practices will be on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 2:45 - 4:30 p.m. We are looking for a coach who can make it to both practice days and stay for the full duration of each session. Coaches do not need to be runners.

Coaches register their daughters at a discounted rate and receive priority registration (all other participants enroll via lottery). You must be able to attend a 4 hour in-person training on Nov. 3 or 4, and complete a 1.5 hr online training session. You will also need to be fingerprinted (paid for by GOTR) since you will be working with children.

If you believe in girl power and the above schedule works with yours, please email Huff parent Chris Salinas at christine_m_salinas@yahoo.com ASAP!

We want to hear from you! District surveys are coming soon

The MVWSD Climate Survey opens on Monday, Nov. 5 for all staff, all parents and students in grades 5 and 7. Additionally, students in grades 6 and 8 will take a social-emotional survey of critical skills and mindsets that enable school success. Your responses provide information beyond test scores that helps us improve our schools.

This survey is administered online through Panorama Education. Your answers to the survey are confidential and compiled by Panorama, a third party. Your honest feedback is very important. Personal results will not be identifiable.

In addition to completing LCAP requirements, the data will help inform work on the District's strategic plan goals and provide longitudinal data for year-to year comparisons. The questions are drawn from an archive of research-based questions in broad theme areas of engagement, instruction, school safety and school environment. We will be asking students in grades 5 and 7, parents and staff members about their impressions of our District sites. We will be asking students in grades 6 and 8 about how they persist, think and feel about school. This is a great opportunity for us to get feedback and continue to work together to improve our schools.

We look forward to seeing the results and working with the leadership of our bargaining units and staff to look for ways we can continue to improve. Look for an email invitation in your inbox on Nov. 5. from Panorama Education. The subject line will be: "Request for your feedback!" Thank you in advance for your input.

Colorcycle (Marker/Dry Erase recycling)

ColorCycle is a wonderful program devised to turn used markers into energy!
Since the pilot of the program in the spring of 2016, Huff families have collected almost 12,000 used markers/sharpies/highlighters/dry erase markers and kept them out of landfill. The markers are sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!

Please continue to help support our efforts by having your kids drop off throughout the year, any used markers, sharpies, highlighters or dry erase markers you may have around the house – even non-Crayola brands. Drop-off boxes will be located in classrooms for your child to deposit the markers. This is being organized through the 3rd/4th grade girl scout troop #60070.

Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year. To learn more about the Colorcycle program, check out www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx or email Huff parent Ann Walsh (annwalsh100@gmail.com).
