College Day

The annual Santa Clara County College Day is coming up on Friday. On October 21, Huff staff will wear their college gear and grade level teams will collaborate to incorporate various college-related activities across the campus. Students are also encouraged to wear their college gear if they have any. Maybe it’s a t-shirt from mom or dad’s alma mater. Perhaps it’s a sweatshirt from a visit to a college. Show off your college swag! It’s never too late to start thinking ahead to the college experience.

Coffee with the Principal: postponed until November 3

Come and have a hot beverage with Mr. Chang and chat about anything Huff-related. The originally-scheduled coffee event for this Thursday has been pushed back until Thursday, November 3 at the same time of day. Hope to see you in the MUR then!

Emergency Preparedness: Disaster Drill

MVWSD will be conducting an emergency preparedness drill sometime this week. This is an opportunity for our school to test our emergency response. We’ll practice evacuation of the buildings, search and rescue, and first aid procedures. This is also a good time to go over your family's emergency procedures. The American Red Cross recommends the following tips, among others, to prepare for an earthquake.

  • Know evacuation and safety plans for all of the buildings you occupy regularly.
  • Pick safe places in each room of your home, workplace and/or school. A safe place could be under a piece of furniture or against an interior wall away from windows, bookcases or tall furniture.
  • Practice “drop, cover and hold on” in each safe place. If there is no sturdy furniture to hold on to, sit on the floor next to an interior wall and cover your head and neck with your arms.
  • Keep a flashlight and sturdy shoes by each person’s bed in case the earthquake strikes in the middle of the night.

You can see all their recommendations at http://www.redcross.org/prepare/disaster/earthquake

Walk to School Day Raffle Winner

Congratulations to 4th grader, Nishtha Verma, on winning the Walk to School Day raffle! She won a new bike and helmet courtesy of the City of Mountain View VERBS program.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Walk to School Day on October 5, 2016. It was great to see the kids walking, biking, or using scooters to get to school. We hope the students continue using alternative forms of transportation to get to and from school to reduce traffic, stay fit, and keep our air clean.

Don’t forget to try out the Box Tops app - depending on what products are being supported you can double your Box Tops contribution! For any Box Top related questions, please contact our Huff Box Tops Coordinator Gina Rybolt at geeners@gmail.com.

The annual Halloween Parade will take place on Monday, October 31 at 12:50 p.m. Parents are welcome to come and enjoy the cuteness. There will be a clearly-marked “circuit” around the blacktop and we ask all families to remain outside of the circuit while the parade is happening. Each classroom will have its own special plan (if any) for the rest of the school day after the parade. If you have any questions or requests, please contact the office.

Colorcycle Marker Recycling Program

Do you have any USED (any brands are accepted)

- Coloring Markers

- Dry Erase Markers

- Hight Lighters

- Sharpies

at home or your work place? Instead of tossing them in the trash, let's Colorcycle them! Your child's classroom or the office have Colorcycle boxes for your dropoff.

Last year, in less than 5 months, we diverted over 3000 markers from landfill! This year, our 4th grade Girl Scout troop 60840 will continue this recycling effort by collecting and shipping used markers to a Crayola facility to convert them into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to fill vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more! Please go to http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx to learn more about Colorcycle. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Ariana Menhenett.

El Camino Hospital construction: Increased traffic Bubb and Huff neighborhoods

El Camino Hospital has embarked on a major construction project on its Grant Road campus that will impact families at Bubb and Huff elementary schools through 2019.

Both Grant Road and Phyllis Avenue will see increased truck traffic as equipment and materials are delivered both to the hospital site and a staging area located near Phyllis and El Camino.

For your safety, please be aware when walking, biking or driving in this area, and help students make safe choices. Be extra careful when crossing streets in the area.

You can sign up for the El Camino e-newsletter, which will give you updates on impacts on traffic, noise or other disruptions:https://www.elcaminohospital.org/about-us/campus-d...

Specific Learner Needs Task Force

MVWSD is looking for additional English Language Learners' parent representatives to the Specific Learner Needs Task Force. This group works to research best practices and to increase quality of programs for special education and English language learners. The next meeting is October 19 from 6-8 pm at Theuerkauf MUR. Bus Stop Change

To improve safety, the District has worked with community partners to identify a new, safer bus stop location near Castro and Mistral elementaries.

Effective Monday, Oct. 31, the Blue & Purple Routes bus stop location will be moved from Latham Street to California Street at the southeast corner of Escuela Ave. The new location is less congested and more visible, and is in a much wider loading zone and area. During the transition, we will also have an adult and signage at the former bus stop location to direct students to the new stop.

When you are driving in that area, please know California Street is not a divided highway, and therefore all traffic going both directions must stop when the bus is loading and unloading, according California’s vehicle code.

For questions, please contact James Bakos, Director, Maintenance, Operations, Transportation, at jbakos@mvwsd.org or 650-526-3587.
