Principal’s Message: Roadmap to the Capstone

Huff’s Roadmap to the Capstone is the culmination of months of work by our School Site Council, teachers, and staff during the spring of 2018. It explains how our students will gain the skills and attributes listed in MVWSD’s “Profile of a Graduate” through Project Based Learning and related activities. As one of our major priorities, the Roadmap lays out a vision for success ahd the steps we’ll be taking over the next three years to get there. If you haven’t had a chance to peruse it yet, please check it out here. I’ll be giving an overview of our major priorities this school year (including the Roadmap) at the first Principal’s Coffee of the year on Thursday, September 27 from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. I hope to see many of you then!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

October 8-12 is our annual Conference week, a key opportunity for families and teachers to discuss the progress of each student and to discuss what supports or extensions are needed to ensure success. Each family signs up for a 20-minute conference per child. Conferences take place in the afternoons; every day that week is a minimum day: students are dismissed at 11:55 a.m. M-F.

Conference sign ups happen via Google Docs. Remember:

1. Sign up for only one slot per child.

2. Make sure all your information is complete and correct.

3. Do not write over someone else’s appointment. (We know no one would ever consider this, but we just have to say it.)

4. Do not add appointment slots that were not there initially.

5. Do not move the Google doc to any other folder.

6. Contact your child’s teacher if you have questions about specific slots. Contact Mr. Chang if you have trouble accessing the Google Doc.

Reminders: Front-of-school drop off and pick up

Most of us are doing a great job of waiting to cross to the south side of Martens Avenue before continuing to the school - thank you. It helps greatly with safety and traffic because it minimizes the use of the crosswalk directly in front of the driveway.

If you are turning left onto Martens from Grant, make peace with the light: running a yellow or a red can lead to truly dangerous situations. Thank you for your attention to keeping all members of our community safe.

Noon Duty Assistant position

We are looking for one more individual to help with supervision at lunch time. More coverage is always better! If you are available between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and are interested in the position, please contact Mr. Chang (gchang@mvwsd.org).

Interpreters Needed

The Mountain View Whisman School District is seeking interpreters for parent teacher conferences and translators for report card comments for the 2018-19 school year. Interpreters are needed for Spanish. You must be available most weekday afternoons from 12:30-4:00 p.m. between October 1 -12 for interpreting at conferences. Interpreters are needed year-round but specifically during conference weeks, possibly for IEP’s and on an as-needed basis. Interpreters receive $24.00 per hour for their service and $29.00 for IEP’s. Interviews and testing to take place ASAP. Successful candidates will be processed in September and are expected to be available for work in October. Donation Deadline this week for Huff Auction

You are invited to the 21st Annual Huff PTA Party & Auction on October 27, 2018. This annual event is Huff PTA's biggest fundraiser of the year! The proceeds from the event help the PTA fund classroom tools and various enrichment programs for the children. If you are new to Huff, check out the FAQ for more details.

The Huff auction is a great community event and is possible through the generous donations from businesses, parents, grade-level donations and teachers and staff. There are many ways parents can contribute towards the event:

  1. Mark your calendar and save the date to attend the Huff PTA Auction Party on Oct. 27 from 6:30-11:00 p.m. at the Mountain View Senior Center.
  2. Parties and events are critical for community building at Huff and for fundraising. Consider hosting a party for the Huff community!
  3. Consider donating a timeshare, vacation home, local sporting event/concert tickets or specific skills (e.g., cooking lessons, photography session, yoga classes).
  4. Help solicit items for the auction and advertisements for the auction catalog or volunteer for the event. Learn more online.

Need a PTA Membership Card or a Receipt for your Donation?

The PTA Membership team is currently working on processing and distributing tax receipts for all donations received. If you need your receipt right away for any reason, please email membership@huffpta.org. Membership cards this year will be sent out by request only. Please email us if you need/want a membership card.

TB Clearance Requirement

California State regulations mandate that parent volunteers who serve students in our schools be cleared for tuberculosis. Volunteers may choose to either have a TB risk assessment or a TB skin test done at the volunteer's expense for the required clearance, which is valid for four (4) years. If tuberculosis risk factors are identified during a tuberculosis risk assessment done by a health care provider, the volunteer will be required to submit a certificate from a health care provider that he/she has been examined and is free of infectious tuberculosis (Ed Code 49406). Please bring this Tuberculosis Risk Assessment Form to your health care provider found here: https://www.mvwsd.org/parents/health.

MVEF News

MVWSD Hearing and Vision Screenings

"Each fall, MVWSD conducts hearing and vision screenings of all students in kindergarten, second-, fifth- and eighth-grade, as California State Law mandates. These screenings will take place at your child's school site, Huff Elementary on October 22, 2018.

Parents will be notified in writing if children fail a screening. Parents who do not want their child screened for either vision and/or hearing should send a letter to their child's school each school year indicating that their child is to be excluded, and vision and/or hearing results will need to be provided from their physician.

If you have any concerns about your child’s vision or hearing please contact your school nurse. Questions about the screenings should be directed to the Health Services office at 650-526-3570 ext. 1050.

When students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically.

Your child is less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically absent. Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade. By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for dropping out of school. For more information, click here.

Project Cornerstone – for parents and caregivers!

The Mountain View-Whisman School District is offering a free series of parent meetings open to all parents and caregivers. Join Project Cornerstone’s engaging workshop - Take It Personally, starting on Tuesday, October 16 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Monta Loma Elementary School. You do not need to be a parent from Monta Loma, just an adult who cares about all kids.

We know that your strong family is the best predictor of your children's success. Parents and caregivers need fresh ideas that work to keep families close, as children grow. Come learn new tools for strengthening your relationships with children and youth in this 6-week workshop facilitated by Project Cornerstone. Each week we will share, discuss, and practice ways to show caring, give support, set boundaries, and build strong relationships that help youth succeed in school, friendships, and life!

Colorcycle (Marker/Dry Erase recycling)

ColorCycle is a wonderful program devised to turn used markers into energy!
Since the pilot of the program in the spring of 2016, Huff families have collected almost 12,000 used markers/sharpies/highlighters/dry erase markers and kept them out of landfill. The markers are sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!

Please continue to help support our efforts by having your kids drop off throughout the year, any used markers, sharpies, highlighters or dry erase markers you may have around the house – even non-Crayola brands. Drop-off boxes will be located in classrooms for your child to deposit the markers. This is being organized through the 3rd/4th grade girl scout troop #60070.

Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year. Become a Living Classroom Docent!

Mountain View Whisman School District’s Living Classroom program inspires our students to value the natural world through garden-based education. We provide Kindergarten through 6th grade classrooms with hour-long lessons that correlate with current science, math, and social studies standards. Living Classroom uses a hands-on, inquiry approach to learning which ensures our lessons are effective AND fun!

This year we will teach over 500 lessons with the help of our volunteers. Becoming a docent is rewarding, enjoyable, and no prior teaching experience is required.
